Man Jailed For Life After Beating Heavily Pregnant Ex To Kill Her Unborn Baby .
A young man has been sentenced to life in prison for brutally attacking his heavily pregnant ex-girlfriend, causing her to miscarry.
Kevin Wilson, a 22-year-old teaching assistant, and a 17-year-old boy were convicted of child destruction and causing grievous bodily harm to Malorie Bantala on June 15 last year.
Judge Mark Lucraft QC sentenced him Wilson to life with a minimum term of 16 years, and his accomplice to 10 years in detention with a further four years on extended licence.
Wilson recruited the teen to help him attack Bantala after she refused to have an abortion, the Old Bailey heard.
Bantala, 22, described her unborn son Joel as the ‘real victim’, telling the court: ‘The moment Joel died inside me I lost everything, literally. Life as I knew it no longer made sense
On the day of the assault Bantala, who was working in M&S and was eight months pregnant at the time, had been out buying decorations for her baby shower. She got home to Peckham, south-east London, at around 8pm.
As she was heading towards her flat, Wilson and his teen accomplice emerged from nearby bushes where they had hidden, wearing crash helmets as a disguise.
They viciously kicked and stamped on Bantala’s stomach as she lay huddled on the ground, desperately trying to protect her unborn baby with one hand.
Giving evidence, she told jurors: ‘I remember looking at him and then something clicked in my mind and I said “Oh shit, it’s Kevin”. He turned round and we made brief eye contact.
‘I didn’t have time to think anything because by the time I knew it, I was on the floor. Kevin proceeded to kick my stomach, probably three or four times and then he stamped on my stomach twice.
‘By then I had screamed ‘Kevin’ for him to stop but he continued to kick my stomach. They were harsh kicks.’
The attackers were seen on CCTV fleeing the area on a scooter, running a red light in their rush back to Wilson’s estate a mile and a half away in Bermondsey.
Family and neighbours ran to help Bantala, but her baby boy was already dead.
She was rushed to King’s College Hospital, where she was treated for potentially-fatal internal bleeding, and two broken fingers on the hand she used to try and shield her baby.
Wilson apologised for his behaviour, and told jurors: ‘When I look back on it now, I could have behaved much better.’
As the verdict was delivered in December, Bantala lashed out at Wilson in the dock and said: ‘I hate you. Drop dead.’
She also said that baby Joel would have been ‘100 times the man Kevin would ever be’.
